PlayStation Vita Third Week Japanese sales drop to 42,000
It looks like the hype from the PlayStation Vita‘s launch has dimmed down while the Nintendo 3DS continues to reign on top. Either Sony’s marketing team is still on vacation or the launch of Monster Hunter 3G for Nintendo’s console really hurt it’s competitor.
According to Media Create’s figures for December 26 through January 1, the 3DS managed to sell 197,952 units while the Vita moved only 42,648 units.
The Vita’s numbers are interesting because the unit debuted and sold 324,859 units (many of which are no doubt from importers since Wololo was able to get one), then dropped to 72,479 units for it’s second week. For it’s third week, the Vita is now behind in sales against the PlayStation 3 and even it’s predecessor, the PlayStation Portable.
Here’s the full Media Create chart for the week. The prior week’s sales are in parentheses.
- 1. 3DS: 197,952 (482,200)
- 2. PS3: 67,199 (75,943)

- 7. X360: 2,453 (4,245)
- 8. DSi: 2,418 (5,894)
- 9. PS2: 1,659 (1,582)
- 10. DS Lite: 28 (32)
Now that may just be because of the software, let’s take a look at Media Create’s top 20 chart for that:

The 3DS has 4 big movers, Mario Kart 7, Monster Hunter 3G, Super Mario 3D Land and Inazuma Eleven Go. The Vita didn’t even have a title on the top 20 chart. From the looks of things, Sony’s banking on the existing PSP library to sell the Vita isn’t doing very well for them making a repeat of the 3DS’s less than stellar release.
Should we expect a price drop for the Vita soon? Well this is Sony so that’s highly unlikely and we’ll still have to see how the Vita fares on international markets with a few more games under it’s belt.
