PlayStation 3 turns 5
Five years ago from today (depending on your timezone at least), Sony released the PlayStation 3 in the US market. Of course going by other release dates, the PS3 turned 5 when it released in Japan back in November 11.
The original PlayStation 3 had a Blu-ray player, a user-replaceable 60GB hard drive, backwards compatibility for both original PlayStation and PS2 games, and the ability to boot Linux. Guess which of those are missing now :).
A few years back, Sony killed off the production of the PS3 Phat and ushered in a slimmer, cheaper (or some might say dumbed down) version of the console. Today, Sony has sold over 50 million units (numbers include both iterations of the console), and is expected to sell more as more games get releases onto the platform.
