Install ChickHen R2 on your PSP

Thanks to Davee and Team typhoon, custom firmware can now run on PSP-3000 or PSP-2000 with TA-088v3 via the chickHen hack. Using chickHen(or in this case ChickHen R2), you can run custom firmware to play ISO/CSO games and run homebrew applications.
So what is chickHen?
ChickHEN is an loader for all Sony PSP models (1000, 2000 and 3000) to run homebrew apps on official Sony 5.03 firmware. Everything runs on the onboard memory of the PSP so there’s no risk of damage (unless you stray away from the instructions). The current version of chickHen is chickHen-R2.
Update: This guide is sorely outdated.
Please refer to this new guide instead : Install Signed 5.03 Hen + 5.03 GEN-C on your PSP. It’s much simpler to follow and will help you install 5.03 GEN-C and the Prometheus-4 module.
Important: If you have official firmware 5.50 installed, stop now. You can’t install the chickHen hack which means you can’t install any of the custom firmware for your PSP (5.03 GEN-A or Custom Firmware Enabler). As of 5.50 OFW, the TIFF exploit that the chickHen hack runs on is already patched.
Requirements:
- A PSP-3000 or PSP-2000 with TA-088v3 motherboard.
- A firmware version of 5.03 or lower. If you have anything higher, you can’t install chickHen.
- Download: 503.pbp | 503.pbp
- Download: ChickHEN R2 | ChickHEN R2
Update your PSP to OFW 5.03
Skip this step if you already have official firmware 5.03 installed.
- Connect your PSP to the computer in USB Mode
- Copy the 503.pbp to folder PSP/GAME/UPDATE
- Disconnect the PSP from USB
- Run the Update via XMB
- When the update finishes proceed to installing chickHen R2.
How to Install chickHEN R2 on your PSP
- On the Settings menu of your PSP’s XMB, do the following
- Restore to Default Settings’ of PSP
- Turn off UMD Auto-Start and UMD Cache
- Character set to us
- Revert theme for classic
- Connect your PSP to the computer in USB Mode
- Unzip ChickHEN R2.zip on your computer
- Copy h.bin to your memory stick root, this is where the VIDEO, PICTURE and PSP folders are.
- Copy the chickHEN folder (use the contents PHAT folder for PSP-1000s, SLIM folder for PSP-2000s and PSP-3000s) inside the PHOTO folder of your PSP (X:/PSP/PHOTO is the root of the memory stick, manually create this if you don’t see one)
- Disconnect the PSP from USB.
- Turn OFF (not standby) your PSP and turn it on again.
- Go to XMB >> Photo >> Memory Stick and wait (YES YOU NEED TO WAIT) an Options menu appear (Right Bottom)
- Hit X to open ChickHEN folder
- If you’re successful ChickHEN-R2 load up, you’ll see flashing colors, and your PSP will reboot automatically into ChickHEN. Check your Firmware version and you should see :

For you lazy bums out there, you can use these programs to install chickHen R2 will just one click.
- Download the installer for your PSP Model:
- Download for Phat (PSP-1000): HEN for PHAT
- Download for Slim/Brite (PSP-2000/-3000): HEN for SLIM/Brite
- Extract the zip file to your computer
- Run the included program (it’s an exe, but don’t worry, it’s virus free)
- Connect your PSP to your PC.
- Hit the install button.
- If you’re successful ChickHEN-R2 load up, you’ll see flashing colors, and your PSP will reboot automatically into ChickHEN. Check your Firmware version and you should see :

After successfully loading chickHen, you can now proceed to run custom firmware on your PSP. You can choose:
Troubleshooting
If you’re experiencing trouble (and yes, a lot of people are having trouble running ChickHen) try these:
- Go to system settings, and choose Restore Default Settings option. Don’t change your PSP’s name from default.
- Turn off the Umd Auto load
- If you have PSP-2000 or PSP-3000 turn off UMD cache.
- Change the character set code to the US (437) or Multilingual latin 1 (850), this code are used for system access of some file types.
- Adding 1 to 2 extra gif images, copy and paste with name e.g. ChickHENe.gif, ChickHENf.gif. Its most happen on High Speed memory stick pro duo. Fake MS or Not
- Don’t use the chickHen folder other than for pictures used for chickHen.
- Try to use a different memory stick or reformatting your memory stick (after backing up it’s contents).

I have a PSP and official 5.03 loaded in it. I have followed your steps to install ChickHEN R2 in it. But when I open the ChickHEN folder, the PSP reads then hangs and automatically shuts down. when I turn it on, nothing appears near 5.03. What is the problem. please help.

hey all, i am sure of that problem, i have tried umpteen times of the chickhenR2 hoping to make it work 100% all the time, PLEASE USE A HIGH SPEED MEMORY CARD. i succeed 10/10 using the high speed memory card, buy i only succeed 1/20 using the low speed memory card. so PLEASE USE A HIGH SPEED MEMORY CARD, I’M SURE IT WILL WORK.

what i did was just copied chickHen R2 in the photo folder…located in x:\psp\photo\…if not located form it !!
and copy the folder CFWEnabler350 in x:\psp\game\
thn what u do remove usb safly thn run the chickHen R2 in the folder photo….the screen will reboot….if the screen get green doted lines and get rebooted thn ur psp accepted the chickHenR2…confirm it seeing in the system settings\system information the version will be [4.01 ChickHenR2]
if this is done ur work done….thn run the CFWEnabler350 from the game….and here u go…now u can play iso/cso !!njoy !!
procedure:
1) run chickHenR2
2) run cfw enabler
3) copy iso/cso games
4) play game….so easy
Note: ur psp may get shutdown insted of rebooting…u may have to try it nearly 100 times
i personaly runed it 15 to 20 times !!
AND
after cracked dont shut down ur psp or remove battery..

i’m a bit new to this but, if i change my memory card on my psp after i have updated it to the 5.03 chickHEN R2 will my psp still be chickHEN R2 ??
Thanks Scorpion. But I haven’t reached that step yet. I still need to run 503.pbp and I just couldn’t get it right. I have downloaded the file so many times and it always shows corrupted data whenever I go to games to run it.
At the beginning it said for any PSP (1000, 2000, 3000), but then under requirements it says PSP-3000 or TA-088v3, my question is, will this work for a PSP-1000? (I’m trying to avoid a Pandora battery)
I can’t seem to get ChickHen to run on my PSP-3000. I recently bought it in Japan. It’s one of the new Carnival Color ones. Is there a chance that they have a new motherboard or something? I’ve been trying to boot ChickHen for almost two weeks now and can’t get it to work. Does anyone know anything about this? I’m kind of a newb when it comes to things like this, but I’ve been following this guide and several others to try to install ChickHen since I bought this thing.

thats because ur doing it wrong… when u run chickhen from ur psp photo folder chickhen will reboot ur psp itself… keep trying till ur psp reboot it self….once reboot then check ur system information by going on setting then system setting

I did everything as meant, but does it have to be official 5.03? I’ve got 5.02. I tried installing chickhen but it only appears as ‘SLIM’ in photo folder, nothing happens. I dont quite understand how to update it to 5.03 from XMB once that thing is in…
I was able to install 5.03, but still, when I go to photo -> memory stick, there’s only folder ‘SLIM’. I wait for options thing to appear and press X, nothing special happens, it only shows me an empty folder. What did I do wrong?
that’s because you were supposed to copy what was INSIDE the SLIM folder and not the SLIM folder itself.
Yeah, noticed my mistake earlier. Sorry for not telling I got it to work, I just got carried away thinking how I’ll play PSP soon… Well, now my PSP is fine, working properly and running homebrew. I’d just like a bigger memory stick… Thanks for this tutorial. Thanks alot.

Thank you for this tutorial. I had tried all of the methods I can find on my PSP2000 with TA-088v3 and nothing worked until I read yours. What did it for me was to change the Character Set from US (437) to Multilingual latin 1 (850); as soon as I switched it Checkhen R2 loaded fine via the tif. Before the switch, the device would freeze for a few seconds then shutdown.
It works now 100% of the time.

Hi, i use PSX2PSP to convert psx to .PBP.. after that, I open the game file.. but the layer is blank.. when i turn on again, the version back to normal. i follow your instruction, but when i open folder PHOTO, and there is ChickHEna.gif and the other, my psp freeze, there are no flashing color. i try and try it.. but it is same.. Is there a problem because i use PSX2PSP? can you help me?

I have a psp 2000 with cfw 5.03 on it. but when i try to get the Hen to run it just keeps shutting off. It will not flash colors on the screen and reset. it just turns off. Don’t change PSP Themes other than default setting, Change your theme to the default theme or use the Restore PSP to Default Settings. What am I doing wrong, please help.

so as of right now there is no way to hack psp 3000 with 5.51? if not then i am screwed…i wish i had looked at this before…
yep. You’ll either have to wait or trade it in for a unit with a much lower firmware version.
1. Format memory stick ( THIS STEP IS ONLY REQUIRED if your PSP is ”virgin”, not modded in some way).
2. Restore default settings
3. Restart goes on
4. Walk through first time installation very quick using RIGHT ARROW
5. Connect your psp to your windows based pc using usb cable
6. In the PSP go to SETTINGS and then choose USB CONNECTION
7. In your PC open your connected PSP device and there you see your PSP folders
8. Copy whole ChickHEN folder into a folder called PHOTO under your PSP folder (not the root)
9. COPY the h.bin file to the root folder of your psp.
10. Back in you psp console get out of USB MODE
11. Go to PHOTO, here you have to see MEMORY STICK … MB, go to sleep mode switching the power off button very quick
12. Resume your psp again and wait 1 minute.
13. Now navigate to the CHICKEN FOLDER and let it load pictures and DON’t push any button, just let it load!
14. You are done after you see several white lines and a quick restart.
15. Verify that you now have activated ChickHen under your SETTING – System Information
16. This tutorial/ guide is done in Vista home premium 32, and the USB CABLE always connected to the PC through the whole process. The PSP is also running by power supplier (the battery is also inserted).
P.S If you are getting troubles after you’ve had shut down the psp, then try to delete egghunt.bin in psp’s root folder and retry.

but when I followed your tips about copying the gif and tiff files on the PSP/PHOTO and without the chickHEN folder, check the ms info and standby the psp and went back again and tried loading the gifs, it finally worked!

I was having trouble also with loading ChickHEN….after several restarts, and failed attempts I plugged the USB cable into the PSP and hooked it up to my PC. Plugged in power cord, and tried it again…problem solved! Thanks!

IT DOESNT WORK WITH ALL MEMORY CARDS..i have a SONY MS PD which only took 5 attempts and i got it to work. I tried with a LEXAR memory card and it didnt even work even after 20 attempts..memory card may be a factor…
Yep. ChickHen has the highest percentage of working with original Sony Memory sticks. I’ll try to add that on the FAQ.
thanks sylv3rblade.Your tutorial is awsome.it really helped alot…my advice to everyone is just be patient and keep trying..make sure you follow every step in the tutorial..also,make sure you keep your PHOTO folder empty except for ChickHEN when you wanna run it..and wait for the chickHEN to load fully before loading it…

I’ve found that it loads faster with a fully charged battery, no UMD in the PSP, and a formatted memory stick.

Hi, I installed ChickHen (the first version), not knowing that there is a difference (R2). Is there a way to upgrade from R1 to R2? or perhaps returning from R1 to Firmware 5.03 so that i can install R2.
R2 has more features and is more stable than R1.

OMIGOD, I had the same problem, chickhen can never install itself until I reverted everything back to its default value, I mean everything, theme, time zone etc, and when I went to the chickhen thingie, it worked like a charm!
You Need to get rid of all those extras things you added to make it work!

I currently have TA-088v3 – equipped PSP-2000. Urmm, i was curious and decided to update my firmware to gen 5.50 A. Sadly, i can’t play the cso/iso games which i could play before. Should i download the chickhen R2? I’m just afraid my psp is bricked now. I will appreciate any advice to this matter. Thank you.

It’s not bricked. You have however, installed the official 5.50 firmware which effectively removes the capability to play ISOs. There is no way currently to downgrade TA-088v3 equipped PSPs.
I see. Hmmm, i heard about the pandora battery and magic ms, which can ‘solve the problem’. You guys think it’s credible ? If in the case i can’t do anything to downgrade, then i have to wait for a suitable programme, is it ? Aha sheeshh.
Pandora works only on hackable PSPs (Phats and Slims that don’t have TA-088v3). And yes, you have to wait until someone finds a way to help you downgrade.

Hi all, wondered if someone could help a guy out here. I’ve read through the guide and it all makes sense, I downloaded 503.pbp to update my psp which is currently firmware 3.03 OC, and put it in the right path, but then when I come to update via the XMB it just shows corrupted data?
Am I doing something wrong or do I need to change my firmware into something else first? My PSP is a 1000 model by the way. Thanks in advance.
You’re upgrading from 3.03 OC.. 5.03 requires a version of at least 3.52.
Tell you what since you’re on a phat here’s what you do.
Download and install:
3.52 then
5.00
Once you’re on 5.00 OFW, proceed to follow this guide to installing custom firmware without pandora
If you’re having problems upgrading from 3.52 to 5.00 I suggest upgrading to something closer like 3.90
Thanks for the reply. I think I’m placing the file in the wrong path or something since I tried the same thing with 352.php and I got the same error of corrupted data.
My path for it is as described PSP/GAME/UPDATE, but I created the UPDATE folder myself within GAME since it wasn’t there by default. I checked up on the model and its definitely a 1000/phat model. Is it my current firmware thats causing this problem?
Nevermind there, I figured that you have to rename the files to EBOOT to make them run. However, now it comes up with game cannot be started error DADADADA. Any thoughts?
Firmware files need to be in a specified naming convention or else they won’t work (ie. 5.00 needs to be 500.pbp). As for the directory, they really need to be X:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE/version.pbp
Cant get the chicken work… Do i need to format my memory card?

first of all I must apologize as this is my first post and I am already seeking help, but given my situation and exhausting all the possible ways I could… I need your guys help. I already posted this elsewhere and some of you probably are from those other forum boards so you might be seeing this for the second time but for the sake of getting a response by posting to a bigger audience I am posting it here as well. Now I am not an idiot when it comes to these things and I find this an extremely weird case, so here goes.
Problem: I can’t upgrade firmware past 3.71 M33-4
**I CAN DOWNGRADE even down to 1.50 JUST NOT ANYTHING PAST 3.71 M33-4!**
PSP Specs:
Motherboard: TA-079
PSP Model: 1001 aka a FAT PSP
Battery: Sony 3.6v 1800 mAh Battery Pack
Memory Stick: Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo 4GB
I have tried (for many different firmware versions past 3.71):
putting the M33/OFW in PSP/Game/UPDATE folder and running it in XMB
Despertar del Cementerio (v3 — 3.71 installer doesn’t even seem to work?)
Hellcats Recovery Flasher (downgrades to 1.50 good but upgrades brick)
ChickHen
flashing by IPL’s (by MMS’s)
and probably some other ways as well but I can’t remember them all right now
Flashing by IPL’s (from the MMS’s) I have tried:
PSP Pandora Deluxe,
Rains Ultra Lite MMS,
PSP Grader,
Catb50 Ultimate Magic Memory Stick Creator and none of those worked (except I got Catb50’s to show the IPL screen except I could not for the life of me get past it — I was trying the 3.80 option maybe would have worked with the 3.71 option) <- I have now tried this as well (3.71 option in catb50's and it doesn't work either to best my knowledge).

The FULL story:
The problem as mentioned in the thread title is I can not seem to update my firmware past 3.71 M33 (more accurately 3.71 M33-4). I get to the Update was successful press X to restart and when I press X it restarts the green light comes on but with the black screen and couple seconds later green light turns off (becomes bricked). This always ends up happening… I have tried different firmwares 3.80, 3.90, 4.01, 5.00, and OFFICIAL firmwares as well past 3.71 but it still does not work. The methods I have used have been putting the M33/OFW in the UPDATE folder and running it, tried Despertar del Cementerio, Hellcats Recovery Flasher, ChickHen, IPL's (by MMS's) and probably some other ways as well but I can't remember them all right now. The MANY times my PSP has bricked trying to upgrade my firmware I tried different IPL's from Magic Memory Stick Creators and only 1 really works on my PSP. I have tried PSP Pandora Deluxe, Rains Ultra Lite MMS, PSP Grader, Catb50 Ultimate Magic Memory Stick Creator and none of those worked (except I got Catb50's to show the IPL screen except I could not for the life of me get past it — I was trying the 3.80 option maybe would have worked with the 3.71 option). What did work was Xi-Bits NewbiInstaller (which installs 3.71). That is what I've been using to unbrick it since nothing else is even unbricking it anyway. My battery (Sony 3.6v 1800 mAh Battery Pack) I have heard mixed reviews about being able to turn into a Pandora Battery but I've been able to successfully use it to unbrick my PSP along with my Magic Memory Stick.
So here I am community, hopefully somewhere here can help me as I am clueless as to why my PSP can not seem to handle going past 3.71 M33-4, I've googled and noone else seems to have this problem and I've spent much, much time trying different combinations and options. Seems so very odd and random…
The only thing I can add to this original thread today is I have found a post from someone with a similar problem from lan.st. No answers were posted or if his was even fixed but cory1492 and jas0nuk threw in their 2 cents which I'll show below.
Hmm.. have you thought about upgrading to 5.03, running chickhen then using Hellcat’s Recovery tool to install 5.00 M33-6?

i need help..i have a psp 3000 and its ofw is 5.02..i’m trying to install chickhen in my psp..the instructions said that the ofw must be updated to 5.03 so i downloaded the 5.03.pbp and put it in the psp>game..there is no update folder so i made one..and then when i was going to open the file,it said the file is corrupted..can someone help me please?

if i use chickhen to put cfw on a phat will i be able to flash it some how? so that it won’t dissappear when turned off? also my slim keeps freezing and then turning off when loading a game or application, I have 5.03 m33-6 with a 2GB and a 4GB mem stick that i switch out regularly. when i said turned off i mean all the way. so i have to reload the cfw. please let me know your thoughts on everything. I’d like to know if I turn off or hard reset my PSP-3000 I’ll have to follow ALL the procedures of ChickHEN again, or only the loading of .tiff files on “PHOTO”?
And another question: after applies the ChickenHEN once, there’s a way to return to original factory state of the FW? (5.03, on my case)

Hi, I’ve followed all the steps but nothing seems to happen. My slim psp remains stuck at 5.03 ofw. I’ve put the h into the root folder, the chickhen slim folder into the photo folder, restarted the psp, gone to photos and opened the folder, and nothing happens. it just shows a slideshow of the pictures. what could have caused this and thanks for the help in advance
Try the easy installer. It seems to work better for most.

-both umd auto start and umd cache off
-character set for us
-change theme for classic
Restart your psp put game in to slot wait to psp start reading disc go to phot wait to see first picture and slowly very slowly go to bottom . I give you my word this gone help you

I’m having some problems installing ChickHEN R2. When I go to the ChickHEN folder, my PSP 2004 just freezes and shuts down. But when I tried installing ChickHEN R1, it immediatly worked. Does ChickHEN R1 have more chance on succesfully installing or am I doing something wrong with R2?
First, some advice to anyone (particularly PSP 1000 users it seems) suffering from the corrupted data issue with the 503.pbp – Renaming this EBOOT.PBP does seem to be the answer.
I had a query about the troubleshooting advice on adding .gif images – Are they in fact supposed to be .gif and not .tiff?

I tried to install through Easy installer for ChickHen R2… well nothing happens.
Then I used the other method:
Copy the 503.pbp to folder PSP/GAME/UPDATE
But it shows corrupt data.
Well now how to go about it?

This is the best how to use ChickHEN Homebrew on any PSP’s.
Don’t use Pandora Battery.
You put must your ChickHEN homebrew on your PSP properly…
Like…
( XMB/Memory Stick Duo) >> Photo >> ChickHEN folder)…
Then if you are using USB Mode on your PSP, you must Cancel after copying a file.
*I’m using a card reader for fast and easy copying file*
After you Cancel the USB Mode:
1. You must turn on the WLAN above your PSP. (This is better than using a UMD demos.)
2. Open your PSP power.
3. Go to Photos.
4. Find the ChickHEN folder.
5. Finally, if your PSP restart, go to GAME Folder and open the INSTALLER of your PSP.
*Note: Don’t downgrade or upgrade your PSP if you are using PSP 3xxx or your PSP will be broken. (I’m using PSP 3xxx 5.03 without downgrade or upgrade. I simply download a ChickHEN Homebrew.)

Dont worry about changing System Information if there is a ChickHEN R2, MHUD, or Gen-A (Full).
But you can play ISOs and CSOs
if your psp gonna work, tell me…

(it has slowed down since the hack).

The first time i used that Gen-A (Full), my game slows… But when i used the CFWEnabler 3.60, my psp normalized…
after you install the CFWEnabler 3.60, go to that game… and set the speed of your psp
set it all into Default to normalize the speed….

If you have a completely hackable PSP yes, you can use a Pandora battery to downgrade, otherwise nope.

HEY I NEED HELP I CANT RUN CHICKHEN ON MY PHAT PSP!
Steps how to reboot your PSP using ChickHEN R2:
1. Turn on the WLAN above your PSP.
2. Turn on your PSP.
3. Go to Settings, then System Settings.
4. You must Restore Default Settings.
4. After rebooting, go to Settings again then Character Set and choose US.
5. Go to Photos where you put ChickHEN folder( You must download the ChickHEN R2 before you do this steps.)
6. Wait until it reboot.
7. After the reboot, go to Games where you put Installer-Loader on your PSP. ( You must download the Installer-Loader with proper firmware, the firmware found in System Information at Settings.)
8. If you want your PSP gets faster, you must download Official CFWEnabler 3.60, i think this is the latest. Go to Games where you put the Official CFWEnabler 3.60. Then set all to default, dont change the others except the default.

I got 5.03 installed now but now I can’t get ChickHen R2 installed.
If you downloaded the ChickHEN R2 and put this on PHOTO folder, the next step is turn on your PSP, then the backround and themes must be in Original or default, turn the WLAN above your PSP, go to Photo in PSP and wait until you saw a greeny thing. After that, check your System if it is ChickHEN R2.
If ChickHEN R2 installed, you must download Installer-Loader with proper firmware and put it in PSP/GAME. ( my firmware is 5.03, so i used 5.03 Installer-Loader.)
if its not effective…
Plug your PSP to your computer or use Memory Card reader…
Then go to PSP/PHOTO…
After that, copy the 2 “chickHEN” (the egg image) to the ChickHEN folder and rename it “chickHENe” and “chickHENf”.
After you copy, unplugged your USB Device that connects to your PSP and go to Photo…

No. Even with a hackable PSP, the only resort for 6.00 is a pandora battery.

copy the whole chickhen even the tiff file inside the chickhen, tiff file on chickhen helps to reboot your psp, after the reboot, install it with CFWEnabler 3.60, i think this is the latest installer

I would like to play ISO using this trick. because you don’t need anything and just chickHen and CFWEnabler. I would like to ask the steps on doing it.

I purchased a psp slim 2003 with a 5.03 firmware and the dealer already installed a chickhen and all the stuff with it to make downloaded games work. I have been playing a game medal of honor heroes and it suddenly rebooted for no reason at all. I tried to use the chickhen but it does not work any more, meaning if I go back to the chickhen it just shows the image of a sunny side up egg. It does not do what it does before like turn your screen green.. I really need help…..
I cannot get this POS application to install.
I am using a psp 1001 with ofw 5.03, psp settings are default. Umd autostart off My memory stick contains nothing other than the files for ChickHen R2. Keyset set to US (437). PSP1001s do not use umd cache.
It was installed onto the psp using EZ503HenFATversion.exe.
When I try to run this exploit from the photo menu in the psp os after waiting for the options menu to pop up, I get a garbled tiff image, followed by what appears to be the psp freezing, followed by the psp shutting down (off) and nothing happening. Same result after dozens upon dozens of tries.
Under system information, System software is still listed as: Version 5.03 with no annotation of “5.03 ChickHEN R2”
What would have been really useful, is a video specifically for psp 1xxx and ChickHen R2. I would appreciate any help with this that people can provide that is not a wild goose chase. I have tried using more than 8 gif images with the ChickHen folder and the .Tiff file.

That technician conned you. Mine came with 8 gb and I can play all these time. Just do as he said by going to images>open the chickhen folder then wait for it to work.

i can’t install 5.03 gen-A, i have installed already the chickHEn R2. I confirmed it in the systems setting, it is already there. Now, i can’t open the launch-me.exe while my psp is connected to my computer. There is always an error that is poping out. How can i fix it, please help me. Thanks!!

Nope. Chickhen only works on 5.03. You need a Pandora Battery to downgrade.

Try replacing your memory stick, non-original (meaning not Sony made) memsticks have always had a problem running chickhen
my old psp 1000 with the 5.03 firmware just keeps crashing over and over(tried it about 100 times now) i just ho photo -> memory stick and then at times it freezes there and other times it doesnt do a thing till i actualy open the image(wich i know is wrong but still) so im wondering if im doing anything wrong to get chickhen to work as i tried it the normal way and the easy installer but none seem to work 🙁

There is no /UPDATE folder. Even if I create so, the XMB will show a corrupted file.

I did it but i downloaded a game and put it on my psp once. I then exited out of the game and shut off my psp. Then when I turned it on the next day none of the games were in my memory card. Your 503.pbp file is probably corrupted. Redownload and try it again.

Yes, if you install 5.03 GEN-A/5.03 GEN-B via chickhen, you will need to reload it again if your PSP turns off for any reason.
But since you’re using a PSP-1000, why not install CFW permanently?

Can you specify the details of the problem you’re experiencing during installation.
when i go photo then memory stick hit “x” it will show chickhen folder then freezes. Tried to put the content of chickhen folder into photo folder only, same thing, remove couple of .gif files and same thing happens, it freezes then shuts down. I’ve reformatted the memory stick and restore default and change the UMD setting to off on both the used the chickhen installer program, when I click on “install it started to install and says “installed succesfuly” but still nothing happened on my PSP, no flash no anything. where did i go wrong? thanks.
The issue is probably your memory stick, try switching (from a friend or if you have a spare) and see how it works.

You can’t run games with just ChickHen. You need to install any of the GEN CFW for your PSP (5.03 GEN-A, 5.03 GEN-B, 5.03 GEN-C)

A technical question. The CFW-E guide says that “Yes, you have to repeat it, but after the first time, you don’t need flash anything.” So this seems that the CFW-E DOES something permanently to the flash that even when you restart the PSP it still remains. What does it actually do to the flash? If it does why isn’t it permanant? So if I am right, there may be a complete hack available in the near future, don’t you think?
It isn’t permanent because unlike older PSP models, the custom firmware is loaded onto the memory, and installed on flash0.
Sorry if I’m asking a noob question. But if CFW-E is installed into the flash0 why cant it be there when I restart the PSP? Why do I have to repeat the procedure again? Does it neesds to be installed to flash1 or flash2 to be permanent?
You are WRONG!! I found that chickHEN doesn’t do anything to flash0 it resides in the RAM its not INSTALLED to flash0 Did you even read the readme of the chickHEN? it says
“Instead of flashing to flash0, it resides entirely in RAM to prevent any damage to the system.” Quoted from the chickHEN r2 official release. Please reply
Whoops. Typo on my part. I was supposed to say that the custom firmware is loaded onto the memory, and NOT installed on flash0. (see that I’m missing the all so important NOT?)
This is why you have to reinstall Chickhen everytime you turn your PSP off. Clear?

As for PSP Ident, you really need to run ChickHen before running PSP ident since it’s a homebrew application and it won’t run on a PSP with just the official firmware.
What I meant was that my PSP is already chickHEN+5.03GEN-C enabled and can I run PSP Ident now? (FW version now reads as 5.03 GEN-C (full).

But you surely can complete mod your PSP with Pandora and why not do it. I desperately want a complete mod for mine. But have to hang with ChickHEN due to ta-088 v3. I didnt know partial and complete mods when I bought mine. I shoud have bought the PSP 2004. BAd luck for me. No homebrew or CXMB!! Hope there’ll be complete mod SOON. Good luck bainie.

It’s not recommended since the installation is bound to hang somewhere. Upgrade incrementally (3.51 -> 3.71 -> 4.01 -> 5.00 -> 5.50 GEN-D3.

but you can give this method a try (Which worked for me in the first 5 tries):
***read through first before u do this***
1. go to photo on XMB and scroll down to memory stick,
2. When the ‘options’ icon appears on bottom right-hand corner,press and hold X
3. While still holdin X, wait for the “options” to appear again for the chickhen folder and when it does, let go of X and quickly press and hold it again. Then quickly scroll to the bottom of chickhen folder (to the tiff image)

Im sorry if this is a stupid question but I have read conflicting information so I just wanted to make sure. I have a PSP Phat 1000 and it has firmware OFW 5.51. One one guide I read it said that the firmware did not matter towards the install of CFW but this guide says not to use 5.51. So which is it? Is there any way I can downgrade my FW so that I can install CFW on this PSP? Thanks a lot for your response.
It doesn’t matter which firmware you’re on when you want to install custom firmware on a hackable PSP (you have phat and it’s hackable, don’t worry) and if you have a pandora battery. If your PSP’s firmware is below or upto 5.03, you can still install custom firmware without a Pandora battery. Above that, 5.50 upto 6.00 and 6.10 and onwards, you need a pandora battery to downgrade your PSP and install custom firmware, I hope that clears things up.

Hi I have a PSP 3000 (Japanese model) I’m not sure of the motherboard as I can’t check because I can install Chickhen R2. I updated to 5.03 and have tried two different memory cards, reformatted numerous times, and reset all the default settings. I read the above comment about holding down X when option appears, but this also doesn’t work (Also for some reason on my PSP the confirm button is O not X) I have tried many many many times. Any help / advice on how to get this running would be greatly appreciated!

i just bought a psp-2006 a few weeks ago it has already in gen-b(full). but one night i think i’ve changed something in the vsh menu.when i played sims castaway it froze, well it always froze whenever i play it.so i restart the psp.di ba whenever you restart it, the system software is not gen-b(full) so i have to change the system software to gen-b(full) again.but when i tried to load chickhen r2 the psp just froze and then turned off.

Have you tried switching memory sticks? Chickhen works best with original sony memory sticks.

Done it! Cut and Paste (to your computer) any folder with photos but not the chickHEN also Cut and Paste (to your computer) any folders inside the PSP folder return it afterward.

Yes, all you need to do is get your games in Eboot format and install the popsloader plugin for compatibility.

after copying the update 5.03 in psp/game/update directory, iv seen the PSP Update ver 5.03 in my psp’s mem stick under GAME BUT…. when i proceeded in the next step which is to update to ver 5.03, its like i am running a game then theres this message pops out saying: The game could not be started. (80020148)

Tried it a hundred times…finally successful!! Piece of advise, if it fails for a number of times, do not keep trying again n again. Better delete the .bin file and chickHEN folder and paste again in PSP as mentioned above..Should work 🙂

From your comment above, you’ve already installed 5.03 GEN-B so technically the only thing that you need to do is to install 5.03 GEN-C so that games that give you the cannot be started error will simply work 😀

What titles aren’t showing up? Have you placed them inside the ISO folder and not the PSP/Game folder?
i put the 5.03 gen-c on the psp-game folder, and the games i put it on the iso folder.
the game that doesn’t appear is the x-men origins and the game that says game could not be started is worms2. both games are working on my cousins psp.
Have you changed the UMD mode on the VSH menu to M33 driver? (Press select on your XMB)

There is currently no way to make chickhen permanent. The standby works fine if you want to keep your PSP in an “off” state.

My guess is… it’s a Japanese-released PSP. They use O as enter and X as cancel.

ChickHen works on 5.03 ONLY. The only way you’ll get your phat to have CFW installed is to downgrade using a pandora battery. No other way around it.

My steps:
check version to ensure that my handheld hasn’t mysteriously updated past 5.03
Switch off Wlan
Format Memory Card
Reset to default settings (leaving original name as is)
Revert theme to classic
Set character set to US (437)
Disable UMD autostart
Disable UMD autocache
Disable USB autoconnect
Disable USB charge
Plug handheld into pc, run chickHEN easy installer
Unplug psp, restart
Go to photos->memory card in my XMB
after options tooltip shows up, select chickHEN
watch PSP freeze at the .tiff file
repeat past three steps about 40 times

Try changing memory sticks. This is usually what prevents people from running chickHen properly.
last 3 times i`ve installed r2 in less than 10 attempts (with no default settings…)
but before that i tryed 11 hours…..
guess the most important thing may be….to select the `character set` to 850-multilingual latin 1 ????(`cause this is the last thing that default settings change….)
Fan friggin tastic guys. I have tried to load up ChickHen for the past 3 days with no success until just now. I have a PSP1000 PHAT, and it just would not work, with hundreds of attempts. After visiting dozens of websites with the same instructions, I finally saw this and changed the Character Set to Multilingual latin 1 (850), and voila – it worked! Thanks guys, U R ACE!

Yep. But seeing as your PSP is likely to be only partially hackable, that’s better off than just OFW.
Ive retried the above listed steps across three memory sticks now. The one which originally worked was a 2gb sandisk unoffical stick. The two which have reliably been utterly useless were offical sony 4gb memory stick mark 2s

I’m trying to hack a PSP-2001 for my brother’s friend. Currently he has 5.03 MHU, but he wants 5.03 GEN-C via ChickHEN R2.
Here’s what I plan to do:
1) Backup and format MS.
2) Softboot to reset everything and revert to OFW 5.03.
3) Install ChickHEN R2.
4) Install 5.03 GEN-C.

If you’re sure that the PSP isn’t a TA-088v3 mobo, you can simply hit the uninstall option of 5.03 MHU or you can simply convert the PSP to 5.00 M33 or even 5.50 GEN-D3 by following the guide below:

I followed everything to the tee and have tried everything but cant get chicken to work. The video at the bottom shows a chickhen folder, but the chickhen files you give only have the one TIFF image and the h.bin. I also see about 19 images in that folder which once again i have only the one. I using the PSP PHAT and am totally confused here, need help!!!
Why not create a folder and copy the SINGLE tiff file to make MULTIPLE copies and rename them appropriately?
I’m trying to do this on a PSP-1001, and I’ve changed everything, even the encoding, and every time I try, it freezes and the memory card access light stays on for about 10 seconds, then it shuts down, but doesn’t install ChickHEN, i.e. It doesn’t say it in the “System Information” thing. I updated to 5.03 after trying on 5.00, and it still didn’t work. Does anyone have any ideas?

I doubt you’ll be able to get a PSP-1000 that’s brand new 🙁 It’s possible that you can still find a hackable PSP-2000 though.

Hey everybody, if you really want to get the HEN to work please follow thesesteps:
1.Open ChickHEN folder in your PSP(Connected to PC)
2.Add any 2 pictures after ChickHENd(Not after SLIM/PHAT)And name the ChickHENe and ChickHENf
3.Delete all data on PSP like games,music,videos ect. except the CFWEnabler and the ChickHEN folder.
4.Disconnect PSP from PC
5.In your PSP XMB(Menu) Go to ChickHEN folder(wait until optons button appears in right down corner)Then press X and scroll to the bottom.
If you’re successful,Your screen fill be filled with colours and reboot and the your in the HEN. If you have doubts, Contact me on [email protected]

Hi yea, I have tried both the manual and easy installer methods. With the manual one, I end up clicking on the photo and then after a bit it turns off. It does not restart itself or anything. Okay, so I am at OFW 5.03, and when trying to run ChickHEN, all it does is freeze up and turns off. Nothing else happens after that and I have to manually turn it back on, back to the same OFW 5.03. Everything is placed in the areas they are needed to be. Anyone got a solution?

Yo dude, I have the same ofw, just do the thing over and over until you get the “blank green screen”. I had 10 tries before, and sometimes just 2. When the Chickhen is done, install the cfw.
i have psp 2000 and i went to pacific mall and got it moded now i have cfw 5.50 gen-d3 and i did not run chickhen yet and i just want to know if i could download the games before doing all that work
If you have 5.50 GEN-D3 already you can run most (note I said most) of the games out there. However, some of the newer games will require you to install the prometheus module because they require OFW 6.20 and up.

OK. I worked after i re-downloaded the file. I’m having problems with the ChickHEN. When I access the Tiff file the PSP turns off and then does nothing.

Hey Sony is a pretty smart company. They Block the system in some PSP 3000’S whick have Ver. 6.20 or 6.30
And when my PSP got bricked due to a virus, the sony company told me that if I Replace it for half the prie i bought the PSP, They would give me PSP 3000 with the latest OFW 6.30. But i didnt want to have a spoiled PSP so i did’nt exchange it.

Yo Silv, what up? hehe, I just noticed this… My PSP got turned off last July because of the “expired chickHEN” and it just turned off last night. When it got turned off last July, I installed the 5.03 GEN-B and I installed a game that requires a higher CFW so I installed a GEN-C, and when I removed the game, I installed back the 5.03 GEN-B. It lasted for about 2 and a half months. But when I only install a gen-b it usually turns off about a month. Does the constantly changing of the CFW makes the life of the ChickHEN LONGER? I need your expert opinion on this dude. THANKS!!!
I’m not sure I entirely get what you’ve posted. ChickHen or any other firmware for that matter doesn’t have an expiration of sorts. ChickHEN unloads because it’s no longer on your PSP’s volatile memory, and the usual cause for this is when your PSP hangs (either due to an unpatched game or a bug).
On the other hand, keeping your battery constantly charged (ergo not being used) can affect it’s life but not so much in a little as a month or two. Sounds like you have a bad battery there.
Oh, ok. I only know when I have to install chickHEN again, is when I put my PSP on stand by and the battery light tooks a little longer to turn off. And then when I turn it back on, the sony logo appears, its like its been turned off, but I just put it on stand by mode. Maybe I have a bug or a battery problem. Anyways, thanks dude. XD
hi! ok this is my problem:yesterday i installed ChickHen,5.03 GEN-C(full) and finally 5.03 Prometheus 7 all worked fine.
Today i went to PSN and surfed it a bit,then i quit PSN and my PSP freeze and turned off.So i did the whole process again to install Prometheus.The difference was:Gen-C uploaded without me pressing the x button(it didnt gived me the choices that it gived me before)however,it installed and is running fine.Then i went to install 5.03 Prometheus and it did the same as Gen-C did(it rebooted automatically without giving me the choice to press x)but in this case Prometheus didnt install,is still Gen-C when i checked Sys Info.i tried a few times i even reset psp settings to default and nothing,Prometheus dont want to install.
The weird thing is that 1st time i installed it,Gen-C and Prometheus,it gived me a few choices(press x to install,press O to uninstall ect ect) and the second time it never gived me a choice it just booted automatically.

When you re-installed ChickHen, it just reloaded the files that you have already installed. No worries though, it’s just fine.
me again,I formatted my MS and i tried the whole process again and still Prometheus don’t work i have no idea what it is,maybe when i got that crash after closing PSN something changed on the PSP?is GEN-C preventing Prometheus from installing?im no expert i just speculate

I’ve copied everything with the installer for dummy’s. The bin file is there and the ChickHen folder with content is in the photo folder. When I restart and go to the mem stick, I see the ChickHen folder witch 7 images 6 GIF pictures ChickHENa till f and the slim tiff image. The tiff is shown as incomplete data… The ChickHen is not getting installed. Do I miss files or am I doing something wrong?

guys help me with my psp. i have a 5.03 ChickHEN R2 system software..but i cant run any games..what should i do?

im scared to install it coz it might brick my psp.mine is psp-3000. and once i already upgrade it to ver 6. then i spend 5000 peso to downgrade it to ver 5. and now the file has been corrupted once again. so i dont know wat to do..

Wow, I didn’t know it took THAT much to downgrade. You can already buy another unit with that, probably 2nd-hand in good condition. XD

How in the world did the shop you went to manage to downgrade your PSP-3000 o_O.

I remember reading from a tutorial somewhere that you can’t have any other images in the X:\PICTURE folder if you have the ChickHEN images. I was able to run ChickHEN even with other images. 🙂
I’ve got psp-3000 with 5.03 soft.
I can’t just install the chickhen. I’ve done everithink needed, the console doesn’t crash like it should. Even used the easy installer wich says: “installed successfuly” but nothing happens.
My console was hacked in past but it isn’t anymore and now i can’t hack it again.

Also something I discovered through numerous testing:
ChickHEN R2/ChickHEN Mod2 – does [u]not[/u] run if there are other images in the ms0:\PICTURES folder
ChickHEN Mod – [u]runs[/u] even if there are other images in the ms0:\PICTURES folder (just make a sub-folder for your personal images e.g. ms0:\PICTURES\YourFolder)

You need a Pandora Battery to downgrade your PSP.
As of 5.50 OFW, the TIFF exploit that the chickHen hack runs on is already patched.WHAT IT IS MEANS?
That means you can’t run Chickhen on 5.50 OFW.

A friend’s friend’s friend modded my psp for me a while ago. I can’t get in touch with them anymore, but I need to check if my psp has chickhen now.
How do I check if my psp has chickhen?
Check your current firmware version. It’s indicated thee (via the firmware you have installed)
I have psp 3600 earlier i had version5.02 .i installed the 5.03 version.
Then i downloaded chickHEN.rar and unziped the the files to my computer. then i copied the chickhen folder from slim folder to PHOTO in my PSP folder. I also copied the h.bin file to the root of my psp. then i restarted my psp and went to photo>memorystick. but then when i open the folder my system hangs. i tried all of the above mentioned trobleshooting techniques but the problem still persists. please suggest a way to solve this.
Blade I need your help. It’s not working for me. I’ve got a phat PSP and I’ve tried to install using both methods but each time it just freezes and then turns off :S Then when I turn it back on it’s the same as it was before. Please help?
iv upgraded to 5.03 firmware, iv put the phat folder in photos and the h.bin file in the root of the memory stick, but it hasnt worked for the last couple of hours! it always freezes when i actually open the tiff file in the folder.

It won’t work for me, I have a PSP2001 (the red GOW PSP). I’ve tried installing ChickHen a few times manually, & I even tried the Easy installer for ChickHen R2. The only thing that happens is my PSP freezes & then shuts off. When I turn it on I still have the OFW 5.03.
Is my only option to get a pandora battery, or is there another way?
Try reformatting your memory stick.

I have a only have a 1GB MS that came with my PSP, maybe that’s the problem?
That’s probably it. Not every memory stick works with Chickhen, try borrowing one from a friend or purchase one (bootleg ones work too)
I have a PSP 2000 with hackable motherboard (HJ serial code) and OFW 6.31. Tried installing ChickHen R2 using the easy installer but it doesn’t reboot and system info remains unchanged. Any advice?

Chickhen only goes up to version R2. Did you mean that you upgraded your PSP’s firmware to 6.xx?

hey I got a psp 2000, updated from 4.05 and now it’s 5.03
every time i try and load or even get close to the ChickHen folder, my psp just freezes and shuts off without rebooting.
I’ve put slim.tiff into the photo/ChickHen folder and h.bin into the root.
there something that i’m missing or timing it wrong?

ummm sir. my ofw is 5.00. i tried installing the chickhen2 for lazy bums. but i saw that there’s a hen error notepad file. it say it only supports 5.03 firmware. the problem is. the big problem is i cant update my FW 5.0 to 5.03. please i need help badly. is my psp bricked? i tried updating my psp to 5.03 but it freezes, it stays on the psp logo (the one where there are colors around) :'(

I need some help. My cousin accidently formatted my memory stick and I’m stuck at my grandparents’ house without a PSP cable. All I have is a Sony Ericsson W810i which supports MSPD. So I tried putting the ChickHen photos in the memory stick. Ok. But when I try to access the photos, it IMMEDIATELY freezez, unlike when trying to ‘flash’ the PSP like before where there is a moment of pause before previewing the folder content. I’m used to Gen-C installations and this problem is something new to me. Help please..
The problem could simply by the memory stick. Try following the new guide instead.
sir, ask ko lang, meron ako psp 3001 5.50 OFW, tnry ko update 5.03, may lumabas na prompt hindi na daw kelangan mag-update dahil 5.50 naman daw ako. so ok, ngayon ginawa ko nag-download na ko nung chickhenr2, pag-unzip ko nilagay ko sa yung h.bin sa xmb, tapos gumawa ako PHOTO folder sa loob ng PSP folder tapos dun ko pinaste yung ChickHen R2 galing sa SLIM folder, tapos binunot ko na sa USB, Restore Default Settings na, UMD Auto Start off na, UMD Cache off, Character Set US, tnry ko din Multilingual Latin, Theme Classic, tapos in-OFF ko na PSP, pag-ON ko punta ko PHOTO, Memory Stick, hinintay ko muna Options tapos pinidot ko X, punta ko sa pinakababa tapos left right etc. WALANG NANGYARI, sinubukan ko na format mem.stick tapos inulit ko ulet wala pa din. PLEASE HELP PO.

Yes you can delete the chickHen files but I would recommend you keep them in the event that you accidentally turn your PSP off.
