PS3 to support DivX

Anime and gaming fans rejoice after the press release sent out by DivX Inc., revealing a partnership with Sony allowing DivX media support on the PlayStation 3 console. The functionality is expected to be enabled via a firmware update future. Additionally, Game Developers will also be given the ability to incorporate DivX video into games using tools within the 2.0 SDK.
Kevin Hell, CEO of DivX, Inc. stated:
“We are excited to work with Sony Computer Entertainment to bring DivX to PS3. Our technology will expand the multimedia functionality of PS3 by enabling users to enjoy access to the broad library of content in the DivX digital media format.”
While people criticizing the move from Sony throw puns at piracy hopping over to the PS3, open-minded consumers wonder why the feature is to be added so late into the next gen console’s lifetime. The addition of DivX adds the advantage of flexibility to the PS3 to serve as a media box (PS3 owners who have installed Linux on their units are excluded from this) without having to go through the hassle of converting videos to MP4 (just like videos on the PSP).
Xbox users are still waiting for their DivX on their 360.
